This work is a concise treatment of holiness in four sermons on Romans 1:4. The first sermon considers the Author, nature and necessity of holiness; the second, the incipient principle of holiness as developed in regeneration; followed thirdly by a treatment of holiness negatively, as exhibited in the mortification of sin; and then fourthly, positively in the work and progress of sanctification. Evans sought to instil his doctrine by close application. He is careful to render comfort and encouragement where due, but with searching questions and earnest expostulation to arrest the attention of those who are not in the paths of righteousness. Spurgeon said of Evans that "a more sound, earnest, and instructive divine never lived." The work was described by Prof. George Smeaton as an admirable work by one who gave "a more emphatic testimony to the personality and work of the Spirit than any other man perhaps has done since the time of Owen."
