Richard Newton (1813-1887) born in Liverpool, England, died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836, and the General Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1839. He was ordained in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in the latter year in the Church of the Holy Trinity. He went on to serve in various pulpits in Philadelphia over the course of his life.

Mr Newton was distinguished for his contributions to juvenile literature. A number of volumes of his sermons directed towards the young are still available in print. This particular volume is comprised of addresses to young people on the Ten Commandments. C.H. Spurgeon said in "Commenting and Commentators": "Though intended for children, ministers will find it useful, for it teems with illustration, and brings up little points of conduct worth touching upon. Mr Newton is the prince of preachers to children." C.H. Spurgeon, from "Commenting and Commentators"
